TASK 3. To complete the task, you need to match four people’s opinions (Person A-D) to seven options. Four people were interviewed for Teens Today magazine about celebrating special occasions. Read the text and then decide which of the people expresses the opinion below.
Special occasions
Lynn (female, age 16)
There’s nothing I enjoy more than celebrating special occasions with close friends. I usually have a small gathering at my house and, if I’m in the mood, I cook most of the food myself, or at least I can prepare some snacks. Sometimes my friends bring food, too. Otherwise, we just take a takeaway and watch a DVD or Netflix.
Mark (male, age 17)
I’m a great football fan, so one year my mum surprised me by baking a cake on my birthday in the shape of a football. My friends even dressed up in football players! This year, however, my dad has bought me a season ticket for my local football stadium. So that’s where I’ll be celebrating this year and maybe I’ll even have a party afterwards, too!
Maisie (female, age 15)
For me, birthdays are a time when you can hang out with people you haven’t seen in a long time. My parents aren’t too keen on having birthdays at home, but they make an exception on my birthday. We usually have a really big party and everyone dresses in their best clothes. I look forward to it every year.
Jake (male, age 12)
I’m quite happy with my own company, really. So I tend to spend my free time reading a book or watching a film. When there is a special occasion in my family. I try to avoid joining in but usually my parents make me. We often argue about it. Everyone says I am unsociable and I suppose I am a bit, but I still have a few close friends who I chat with on social media.

I Introduction
0) I Introduction
The Pacific Ocean in the Northern Hemisphere contains a series of ocean currents which all connect together and form a clockwise pattern. This is called the North Pacific Gyre. There are four different currents which seem to represent each point of the compass. They are the North Pacific Current to the north, the California Current to the east, the North Equatorial Current to the south and the Kuroshio Current to the west. This ‘circle’ surround approximately ten million square of ocean
1)
The first current of this gyre is the North Pacific Current. This current carries warm water slowly from west to east. it is formed by the force of other two other currents: the Kuroshio Current, which comes out off the coast of Japan, and the Oyashio Current, which comes down from the subarctic area and travel in a counter-clockwise direction along the western part of the North Pacific Ocean. Along the weastern coast of North America we can find the California Current, which flows south, taking cold water to the coast in the south. The North Equatorial Current is caused by the rotation of the Earth, which makes the flow of water go from east to west.

2)
The fourth current in the Pacific Gyre is the Kuroshio Current. This current goes past the east coast of Taiwan and then gets up, past Japan, where it merges with the North Pacific Current. This current takes warm tropical water towards the Polar Region. Kuroshio in English means Black Stream, which this current often referred to. It is these warm waters that allow life Japanese coral reefs to survive. These coral reefs are the northernmost reefs in the world. These warm waters also allow Japan to have a big fishing industry.

3)
If you were to travel to the center of the North Pacific Gyre, you would be extremely surprised that the water is relatively stationary. The circulatory rotation of the Gyre forces all the waste material to travel inwards and towards the center. It is for this reason that fisherman avoid the center as the water doesn’t have enough nutrients for fish to live on, so fishing there will not be profitable. Sailors avoid this area as well, many because very little wind blows there, so sailing would be pointless.

4)
This rotation in question has caused a lot of flotsam, such as driftwood, man-made rubbish, cargo lost from ships to accumulate in the middle. All this rubbish has floating a sea of waste. In the past, most of this rubbish has biodegraded but there are a large number of plastics. The main problem is that plastic does not biodegrade. Instead, it photodegrades, which refers to the absorption of photons, like infra-red radiation and ultra-violet light.

5)
Photodegrading cause the plastic to break into smaller pieces. These small pieces begin then to look like small drifting organisms which jellyfish feed on. In some parts of the gyre there are six times as many plastic particles as there are drifting organisms. The fish also think that this is food and eat these particles. This sadly results in a lot of fish dying.

6)
Sometimes the currents in the gyre make a small temporary adjustment, which usually send rubbish outwards and then subsequently wash up on beaches around the gyre. In 1990, a cargo ship got caught in a big storm while crossing the Pacific. Twenty one containers fell overboard eventually resulting in the appearance of 80.000 Nike trainers and boots washing up on beaches in British Columbia – Canada, Washington USA, Oregon USA, and Hawaii USA, over a period of three years.

The National Ocean and Atmospheric Authority of the USA has analysed the movements of the rubbish travelling around the gyre and have predicted that a piece of rubbish travelling from Japan will take 3 years to get to the weaster coast of USA. Curtis Ebbesmayer noticed that the current can change drastically from time to time. He concluded that if two bath toys are thrown into the middle of the Pacific Ocean at the same time, one might wash up in Hawaii and the other one could end up in an Artic floating island of ice in the North.
